Contexto e historia
Fichte divide la historia humana en cinco edades según la relación con la razón: la de la razón como instinto, la de la autoridad externa, la de la liberación de toda autoridad —que es donde sitúa su propio tiempo—, la de la ciencia y la del arte de vivir según la razón. Llama a la tercera «el estado de la pecaminosidad consumada», y es el núcleo de su crítica: una época que ha destruido toda autoridad sin haber llegado todavía a ningún conocimiento propio, y que por tanto no cree nada. Son conferencias públicas y se entienden sin haber leído la «Doctrina de la ciencia», que es otro nivel de dificultad. Tres años después vendrían los «Discursos a la nación alemana», también en el corpus.
