Contexto e historia
Este texto estuvo perdido siglos y se conocía solo de nombre. En 1905 un pandit entregó un manuscrito en hojas de palma a la biblioteca oriental de Mysore, y R. Shamasastry lo identificó y lo editó: hasta entonces nadie lo había leído en época moderna. La atribución a Kautilya, el ministro de Chandragupta Maurya, es tradicional, pero los especialistas fechan el texto tal como nos ha llegado bastante más tarde y lo consideran obra acumulada.
Contexto editorial, no una fuente citable: a diferencia de los pasajes de la obra, estos datos no se pueden comprobar contra el corpus.
