Sexto escribía hacia el siglo II o III y es la fuente principal que tenemos del pirronismo: buena parte de lo que sabemos del escepticismo antiguo viene de estas páginas. Cuando volvió a imprimirse en el siglo XVI, en griego y en latín, el libro sacudió la Europa moderna: Montaigne sale directamente de él, y Descartes escribe la duda metódica con estos argumentos delante.
