El volumen gemelo del anterior, de 1788: si aquel trataba del conocer, este trata del obrar, y es donde Reid expone su teoría de la libertad y de la moral.
Contexto e historia
El argumento central sobre la libertad es el de la «causalidad del agente»: una acción no es causada por un deseo anterior como una bola choca con otra, sino que hay un agente que la causa, y esa es una manera de causar distinta de la física. Reid defiende que sin eso no tiene sentido tener a nadie por responsable. La parte moral sostiene que los principios del deber son evidentes por sí mismos, como los del sentido común en el conocimiento, y se opone explícitamente a Hume: la razón no es esclava de las pasiones, y lo que está bien no es lo que nos gusta. Los dos volúmenes de Reid se escribieron para ir juntos, y leer uno solo es ver únicamente la mitad.
