El segundo volumen de la obra donde Godwin sostiene que el gobierno es un mal necesario solo mientras dure la ignorancia, y que la coacción, la propiedad e incluso la promesa acaban sobrando si la razón se extiende.
Contexto e historia
Publicado en 1793, en plena reacción británica contra la Revolución Francesa; se dice que Godwin se libró del procesamiento porque el libro era demasiado caro para llegar al público que preocupaba al gobierno. Hay un detalle de edición que importa: sacó una segunda edición en 1796 y una tercera en 1798, y las fue suavizando. Las posiciones más extremas están en la primera, y por eso quien lo cite debería decir siempre qué edición lee.
