Contexte et histoire
Tocqueville partit aux États-Unis en 1831 avec la mission officielle d'en étudier les prisons, et le livre qui en sortit fut tout autre chose. Ce premier volume, de 1835, est descriptif et optimiste ; le second, de 1840, est bien plus abstrait et bien plus sombre, et c'est là qu'apparaît le fameux « despotisme doux » d'une société d'égaux qui se remet à un pouvoir tutélaire. Mieux vaut ne pas les confondre ni les citer comme s'ils formaient un seul livre écrit d'un coup.
