Contexte et histoire
Il vaut la peine de savoir à qui il s'adresse, car c'est ce qui le distingue : ce n'est pas un catéchisme pour les fidèles mais pour les curés, destiné à leur fournir matière et vocabulaire pour prêcher. D'où l'absence de la forme brève par questions et réponses et la présence de longs développements. Il parut en 1566, trois ans après la clôture du concile, promulgué par Pie V ; pendant des siècles il fut la référence de ce qu'il fallait enseigner et, surtout, de la manière.
