Contexte et histoire
La forme est la thèse : Proclus écrit le néoplatonisme à la manière d'Euclide, énoncé et démonstration, sans dialogue. Le livre eut une seconde vie imprévue : une adaptation faite en monde arabe passa ensuite en latin sous le nom de Liber de causis, et l'Europe la lut des siècles durant comme si elle était d'Aristote. C'est Thomas d'Aquin qui en identifia l'origine, une fois qu'il put la comparer au présent texte traduit.
