Contexte et histoire
Elle fut fixée vers l'an 200, et la tradition en attribue la rédaction à Juda ha-Nassi. Ce n'est pas un code qui tranche : elle consigne les avis de rabbins qui divergent et les laisse souvent côte à côte sans conclure. C'est la couche de base du Talmud — la Guemara est le débat ultérieur sur ces mêmes pages — et la lire seule donne donc la loi sans la discussion qui l'accompagne.
