Contexte et histoire
Tertullien est le premier auteur chrétien important à écrire en latin, et une bonne part du vocabulaire dont usera ensuite le christianisme occidental — à commencer par « trinitas » — vient de lui. L'Adversus Marcionem a en outre valeur de source : Marcion voulait une Bible sans Ancien Testament, et presque tout ce que nous savons de lui nous vient de celui qui le réfutait. Vers la fin de sa vie, Tertullien passa au montanisme, et c'est pourquoi il n'a jamais été déclaré saint.
