संदर्भ और इतिहास
प्रोक्लुस ने इसे पाँचवीं शताब्दी में लिखा, यूक्लिड से आठ सौ वर्ष बाद; और इसका मूल्य दुहरा है। दर्शन के रूप में यह उस पक्ष का समर्थन करता है जिस पर आज भी बहस है: गणितीय वस्तुएँ न संसार की वस्तुएँ हैं न परिपाटियाँ, बल्कि वे कल्पना में उन तर्कों के प्रक्षेपण के रूप में हैं जो आत्मा के पास पहले से हैं। दस्तावेज़ के रूप में इसमें 'ज्यामितिज्ञों की सूची' है — यूक्लिड से पूर्व की ज्यामिति के इतिहास का सारांश, जो यूदेमुस की एक लुप्त कृति से आया है; और यूनानी गणित के आरंभ के विषय में हम जो जानते हैं वह लगभग यही है। इन पृष्ठों के बिना गणितज्ञ के रूप में थेल्स और पाइथागोरस आज से भी अधिक धुँधले होते। अनुवाद टॉमस टेलर का है, 1788 का।
