Di che cosa tratta

Il volume XLIX dei «Sacred Books of the East», che raccoglie tre testi capitali del mahayana: il Sutra del diamante, il Sutra del cuore e i due Sukhavativyuha.

Contesto e storia

Sono tre cose assai diverse in un solo volume. I primi due appartengono alla letteratura della «perfezione della sapienza»: quello del diamante è un breve dialogo in cui il Buddha disfa a una a una le categorie con cui il discepolo cerca di afferrare l'insegnamento, e quello del cuore è ancor più breve — un duecentocinquanta parole in sanscrito — e contiene la formula «la forma è vacuità, la vacuità è forma», probabilmente il testo buddhista più recitato al mondo. I Sukhavativyuha sono d'altra tradizione: descrivono la Terra Pura di Amitabha e il voto che la sostiene, e sono il fondamento del buddhismo della Terra Pura, la forma più diffusa nell'Asia orientale. Le traduzioni sono di Max Müller e di Takakusu, del 1894.
