背景と歴史
トクヴィルは一八三一年、監獄制度を調査せよという公務を帯びて合衆国へ渡った。そこから生まれた書物は、まったく別のものだった。一八三五年刊の本巻は記述的で、楽観的である。一八四〇年の第二巻ははるかに抽象的で、はるかに暗い。かの有名な「穏やかな専制」——平等な者たちの社会が後見的な権力に身を委ねる姿——が現れるのはそちらだ。両者を混同してはならず、同時に書かれた一冊であるかのように引用してもならない。
