背景と歴史
第二巻の定義——魂とは、可能態において生命をもつ自然的物体の第一の現実態である——は、異なる二つの実体がいかに結合するかというプラトン的難問を一挙に消してしまう。結合しない。二つではないからだ。斧の形が鉄から切り離された何かではないのと同じである。ここから階梯が出てくる。植物は栄養をとり繁殖する。動物はさらに感覚し運動する。人間はさらに思考する。第三巻には能動知性についての一節があり、これが千五百年の注釈を占めた。アリストテレスはそこでこの部分を「分離可能、受動せず、混じらぬもの」と呼びながら、それが各人のものか共通のものかを明らかにしないからである。アヴェロエスは一方に読み、トマスは他方に読み、争いはルネサンスまで続いた。現存する最古の心理学および知覚論の書でもある。
