知っておくとよい。本目録には同一作品の項目が二つある。本項と、長い表題のもう一項である。別の書物ではない。ディオゲネスについて肝心な点も繰り返しておく。彼は哲学者ではなく編纂者であり、検証可能な事実を逸話や風説と、断りなく混ぜている。それでもなお代替不能である。多くの古代哲学者にとって、彼が唯一の現存典拠だからだ。引用は巻と節によって行い、頁によっては行わない。
