一八二三年の書。使徒パウロはイエスのそれとは別の宗教を作り出し、その上に重ねたのだ、とベンサムが論じる。ガマリエル・スミスの筆名で刊行された。
背景と歴史
ベンサムがここで用いたのは、法学の著作におけるのと同じやり方だ。本文を近くから読み、言明を突き合わせ、矛盾を探す。使徒行伝に見えるパウロ回心の三つの記述は互いに合わない。パウロはイエスを知らなかった。彼が持ち込んだ禁欲の道徳は——とりわけ性に関するそれは——福音書に根拠をもたない。筆名は気まぐれではない。一八二三年のイングランドでこれを実名で出すことは現実の危険であった。刊行後、この書は黙殺されるか攻撃されるかした。さらに露骨な第三部は未刊のまま残された。これが論争のための小冊子であること、二十世紀の聖書文献学がこれらの問いの多くを別の道具で組み直したことを承知の上で読むのがよい。
