その論はこうだ。教育とは知識の在庫を受け身の受け手に手渡すことではなく、学ぶ者がみずから為し、試し、直さざるをえないように経験を組み立てることである。同じように、社会が民主的であるのは、その成員が関心を分かちあい、他の集団と自由に行き来する度合いにおいてである。「教養」教育と「職業」教育を分けることは、外の階級の分かれ目を学校の中で繰り返すことにほかならない。デューイ自身、自分の哲学の全体がもっともよく述べられているのはこの書だと語っていた。進歩主義教育運動の土台である。
