子どもをどう育てるかについてのロックの書。友人にその息子のことで書き送った手紙から育ち、一六九三年に刊行された。
背景と歴史
子どもの心を白紙になぞらえる像を世に広めたのはこの書であり、そこから実践上の結論が引き出される。大人になって何者になるかはほとんどすべて習慣による、ゆえに教育は頭を満たすより先に人柄を形づくらねばならない、と。ここから具体的な助言が出てくる。それらは人々を憤らせ、そして勝った。強情のとき以外は体罰を用いないこと、菓子で褒美をやらないこと、たっぷり運動し戸外の空気に触れること、硬い寝床に寝ること。そして何よりも、子どもと一人の人格として道理を論じ合うこと。子どもはまさに一人の人格なのだから。一世紀のあいだ、ヨーロッパでもっとも影響力のある教育書であった。ルソーが『エミール』を書いたのは、これと論じ合ってのことである。
