背景と歴史
1689年、名誉革命の直後に匿名で刊行され、以後何世紀もその革命の弁護として読まれてきた。1960年、ピーター・ラスレットは執筆がそれ以前、1679〜83年の排斥危機の時期であったことを示した。すなわち、すでに成った革命ではなく、これから起こすべき革命のための議論だった。ロックは生涯著者であることを否定し、遺言の中でようやく認めた。
