匿名で出版され——標題紙には「ある淑女による」とあるだけである——、二百年以上のあいだメアリー・アステルの作と考えられてきた。アステルは同じ年に『淑女への真摯な提案』を出していた。一九一二年、アルフレッド・アップハムがこれをアステルのほかの著作と突き合わせ、内容上の食い違いを見つけた。今日では**ジュディス・ドレイク**に帰されている。根拠は、第二版で夫が著者に捧げた詩と、すでに「ミセス・ドレイク」の作としていた書籍商カールの目録である。**SigPhiの目録では二〇二六年八月二日までアステルの下にあった。**本文の出典がそう分類しているからである。 この本はそれ自体で立っている。男女の不平等は自然からではなく教育と習慣から来ると論じ、しかもそれを風刺的な人物描写——衒学者、田舎地主、伊達男、好事家——によって、自分は優れていると思い込んでいる男たちを笑いものにしながら論じている。
