背景と歴史
この書は幾世紀ものあいだ失われ、名だけが知られていた。一九〇五年、あるパンディットが貝葉写本をマイソールの東洋図書館に持ち込み、R・シャーマシャーストリーがそれを同定して校訂・刊行した。それまで近代において、これを読んだ者はいなかった。チャンドラグプタ・マウリヤの宰相カウティリヤに帰する伝承はあるが、専門家は現存する形の本文をかなり後代に置き、累積して成った著作と見なしている。
