『対比列伝』の四巻本のうち第三巻。
背景と歴史
読み始める前に知っておくとよい。本目録には『列伝』の版が二種類ある。この四巻本と、もう一つの一巻本である。別の作品ではないし、互いを補い合うものでもない。同一の本文を別の体裁で示したものであり、巻分けは出版者によるもので、プルタルコス自身のものではない。彼が書いたのは独立した一対ずつの伝記だからだ。引用の慣例は、人物名と章番号を挙げること——「アレクサンドロス 1」——であり、どの版でも通用する。
