Контекст и история
Французское заглавие — «Matière et mémoire». Ход умный: вместо отвлечённого спора о том, вещественен ли дух, Бергсон берёт то явление, в котором задачу можно тронуть пальцем, и различает две памяти, которые обыкновенно смешивают. Одна — привычка: знать урок наизусть, что есть расположение тела; другая — воспоминание об единственном, помеченном числом мгновении, которое не складывается в мозгу, как бумага в дело. Отсюда его положение, что мозг не содержит воспоминаний, а отбирает их для настоящего действия. Образ опрокинутого конуса, в котором всё прошедшее стягивается к точке настоящего, — из самых приводимых в новой философии.
