Контекст и история
Первое издание относится к 1855 году, за четыре года до «Происхождения видов»: Спенсер мыслил эволюционно ещё до публикации Дарвина, хотя механизм у него был иной — он допускал наследование приобретённых признаков, что оказалось неверным. Читать стоит, помня об этом: перед нами случай, где ясно видно, как идея может носиться в воздухе прежде, чем кто-либо найдёт ей доказательство.
