Контекст и история
Рид в начале объясняет, что, читая Юма, увидел: выводы его правильно следуют из посылки, принимаемой всеми, — а значит, посылка ложна. Эта книга есть доказательство, ведомое случай за случаем: глава об обонянии, глава о вкусе, глава о слухе, глава об осязании и четыре о зрении; и в каждой он показывает, что ощущение и восприятие не одно и то же и что воспринимаем мы не идеи, а предметы. Разбор зрения и восприятия расстояния повлиял на позднейшую опытную психологию. Два более обширных сочинения Рида — об «умственных» и о «деятельных силах» — есть в собрании и следуют за этим.
