背景与流传
一六七〇年匿名出版，印着假的出版地，一六七四年即遭禁：这是那个世纪最危险的一部书，同时代的人立刻就明白了这一点。支撑全书的论旨是：哲学思考的自由并不威胁虔敬，也不威胁国家的安宁——摧毁这两者的，恰恰是对这自由的压制。为达此论，斯宾诺莎做了一件前人从未以如此严格的方式做过的事：把《圣经》当作一份历史文献来读——由人写给人，其中预言是生动的想象而非知识，神迹什么也证明不了，因为没有任何事发生在自然秩序之外。现代圣经考证由此而来。末尾几章引出政治上的结论：契约转让的是权力，不是思想的能力；想要统治意见的国家，伤的是它自己。英译本为埃尔维斯一八八三年所译，在本馆分作四部分。
