书名出自近代埃及学者；埃及人自己称之为《白日出行之书》。它既不是一部单一的书，也不是有固定文本的圣典，而是二百余章咒辞的储备；每一卷纸草只抄录其中一部分，按亡者的财力订制并支付。底比斯书吏阿尼的这一卷，是现存最长、插图最精者之一。核心是第一二五章，即审判：亡者的心脏要与玛阿特的羽毛同秤；在那里，亡者诵念“否定式告白”，一一列举自己“没有做过”的事。沃利斯·巴奇一八九五年的译本把此书带入西方，如今早已过时：它作为其时代的历史文献可信，作为今日的语文学解读则不可。
