它与目录中另以《小猎犬号航海记》之名出现的，是同一部作品；此点须说明，免得看上去像是达尔文写了两本书。当年问世时用的正是这个题名，《航海记》之名是后来才通行的。初版一八三九年，一八四五年的第二版在若干要紧处作了改写。引用时必须说明所据何版，因为两版所言并不相同。
