这一论证，是把进化论用到了没人料到的地方：假使微笑、愤怒或羞耻只是文化的约定，那么各民族当各有其式；假使它们是某些昔日曾有用处之动作的遗留，那么它们在各处必然相同。达尔文以问卷寄送世界各地的传教士与移民，从摇篮起观察自己的孩子，又走访收容所与动物园，以此验证。这是第一部以照片作插图的科学著作，其中若干还是现存最早的表情照片。此书湮没了一个世纪，直到七十年代的心理学才把它捡回来；至于他对到什么程度，争论至今未息。
