背景与流传

写于公元前五五年,场景设在公元前九一年,由克拉苏与安东尼乌斯发言——这两位是上一代的演说家,西塞罗年轻时曾亲耳听过。此书成于他被排斥于政治之外的时期,部分是对各种修辞手册的匡正,其中也包括他自己年轻时所著的《论题材的发现》,那部书他后来认为稚嫩而不足取。
