背景与流传
此书失传逾千年。一八一九年,安杰洛·迈在梵蒂冈的一份重写本中发现了它,写在奥古斯丁诗篇注释的下层:为了再用羊皮纸,西塞罗被刮去了。复得之本残缺甚多,断裂之处显而易见。唯一的例外是结尾的《西庇阿之梦》,它因马克罗比乌斯为之作注而独立留存,因此在全书其余部分尚不存在的整个中世纪里一直被诵读。
