背景与流传
格林与格罗斯一八七四至七五年编订的四卷本，目录中收有第一、二卷。这两卷所含者，正是休谟二十八岁时刊行的《人性论》——用他自己的话说，此书“一出版即胎死腹中”。要害都在这里：一切观念皆源于印象；因果的分析——我们并未观察到任何必然的联系，只见一种恒常的相继，是习惯教我们去期待它；对“自我为一实体”这一观念的攻击；以及“是”与“应当”之分，两百年的道德争论都由它整理出来。第三、四卷收随笔与两部《研究》，那是同一批思想后来更易读的重述，这两卷目录中未收，但两部《研究》和《随笔集》都作为独立条目收在目录里。
