此英译本把德文的两卷分作三册：一八一八年的原书，以及叔本华在二十六年后、一八四四年为它补写的补遗卷。补遗并非次要的附录：其篇幅与原书相当，而且他的思想往往在那里读来更清楚，因为那时他写作已无须再说服任何人接受全书的架构。他本人要求把全书读两遍。
