背景与流传
里德开篇便交代：读休谟时他发现，休谟的结论是从一条人人接受的前提正确地推出来的；那么，出问题的必是那条前提。此书就是把这一证明落到一个个具体的例子上：嗅觉一章、味觉一章、听觉一章、触觉一章，视觉则占四章。在每一章里他都表明：感觉与知觉并非一事，而我们所知觉到的不是观念，是对象。他对视觉、尤其是对距离知觉的分析，影响了后来的实验心理学。里德篇幅更大的两部——《人的智力》与《人的能动之力》——语料库中皆有，成书都在此之后。
