Context i història
Aquesta traducció anglesa reparteix en tres toms el que en alemany són dos volums: el llibre del 1818 i el volum de complements que Schopenhauer hi va afegir el 1844, vint-i-sis anys després. Els complements no són apèndixs menors: ocupen tant com l'obra original i sovint s'hi llegeixen millor les seves idees, perquè hi escriu ja sense haver de convèncer ningú de l'estructura. Ell mateix demanava que el conjunt es llegís dues vegades.
