Contexte et histoire
La définition du livre II — l'âme est l'acte premier d'un corps naturel ayant la vie en puissance — dissout d'un coup le problème platonicien de la jonction de deux substances différentes : elles ne se joignent pas, car elles ne sont pas deux, de même que la forme d'une hache n'est rien de séparé du fer. De là sort une échelle : les plantes se nourrissent et se reproduisent, les animaux en outre sentent et se meuvent, l'homme en outre pense. Le livre III contient le passage sur l'intellect agent qui occupa quinze siècles de commentaires, car Aristote y dit que cette partie est « séparable, impassible et sans mélange » sans éclaircir si elle est personnelle ou commune : Averroès y lut une chose et Thomas une autre, et la querelle courut jusqu'à la Renaissance. C'est aussi le premier traité de psychologie et de théorie de la perception que nous ayons.
