Le livre XII contient le moteur immobile, que la théologie médiévale identifiera à Dieu. Le livre I s'ouvre sur la phrase « tous les hommes désirent naturellement savoir », et le livre II contient le premier tour d'horizon historique de la philosophie qui nous soit parvenu.
