De quoi il s'agit
La première partie de l'Avesta dans les « Sacred Books of the East » : le Vendidad, le code de pureté et de purification du zoroastrisme.
Contexte et histoire
C'est la partie de l'Avesta qui ressemble le moins à un livre religieux tel que se le figure un lecteur moderne, et il vaut la peine de le dire. Le Vendidad — « loi contre les démons » — est surtout un traité juridique et rituel : quels contacts souillent, comment il faut traiter un cadavre, quelle peine répond à chaque faute, comment se purifient la terre, l'eau et le feu, comment il faut soigner un chien. Son intérêt est double : c'est un document juridique et social de l'Iran ancien d'un détail extraordinaire, et il explique des pratiques zoroastriennes qui existent encore. Le noyau ancien et religieusement central de l'Avesta, ce sont les Gâthâs, qui sont dans la troisième partie. La traduction est de Darmesteter, en 1880.
