De quoi il s'agit
La seconde partie de l'Avesta dans les « Sacred Books of the East » : les Yashts, les Sîrôzahs et les Nyâyishes, c'est-à-dire les hymnes aux divinités et les prières quotidiennes.
Contexte et histoire
Les Yashts sont la partie la plus littéraire de l'Avesta et aussi celle qui conserve le plus de matière antérieure à Zoroastre : ce sont des hymnes à des figures divines — Mithra, Anâhitâ, Verethragna, les Fravashis — que le zoroastrisme intégra au lieu de les supprimer, et ils ont de ce fait une double valeur, religieuse et mythologique. Le Yasht de Mithra en particulier est une source principale sur un dieu qui finit par avoir son culte propre dans tout l'empire romain. Les Nyâyishes sont des prières au soleil, à la lune, aux eaux et au feu ; les Sîrôzahs, des invocations pour les trente jours du mois. Le noyau religieux central de l'Avesta — les Gâthâs, de Zoroastre — est dans la troisième partie. Traduction de Darmesteter, en 1883.
