Le livre de 1874 qui reposa la question de ce qui distingue le mental du physique, et qui donna à la philosophie postérieure la notion d'intentionnalité.
Contexte et histoire
La thèse centrale est brève et s'est révélée d'une fécondité extrême : tout phénomène mental est « de quelque chose ». Il n'y a pas un voir qui ne voie rien, ni un désirer sans désiré ; l'objet y est contenu d'une manière que Brentano disait intentionnelle, et qui n'exige pas qu'il existe réellement — on peut craindre une chose qui n'est pas. Aucun phénomène physique n'a cela, et le caractère sert donc à distinguer les deux domaines. Brentano voulait une psychologie empirique mais non expérimentale au sens du laboratoire, faite de la description soigneuse de ce qui se donne. Husserl fut son élève et il en sortit la phénoménologie ; y passèrent aussi Meinong, Twardowski et, un temps, Freud.
