Contexte et histoire
La stratégie est fine : au lieu de discuter dans l'abstrait si l'esprit est matériel, Bergson prend le phénomène où le problème se touche du doigt, et distingue deux mémoires qu'on confond d'ordinaire. L'une est l'habitude — savoir une leçon par cœur, ce qui est une disposition du corps — ; l'autre est le souvenir d'un moment unique et daté, qui ne s'emmagasine pas dans le cerveau comme un dossier. De là sa thèse que le cerveau ne contient pas les souvenirs mais les choisit en vue de l'action présente. L'image du cône renversé, où le passé tout entier se contracte vers la pointe du présent, est l'une des plus citées de la philosophie moderne.
