Contexte et histoire
Il a une histoire textuelle qu'il vaut la peine de connaître. Il l'écrivit vers 1604-1606, très jeune, à la commande de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales, qui avait capturé un navire portugais et devait justifier l'acte. Il ne le publia jamais : il n'en tira qu'un chapitre, en 1609 et sans signature, le Mare Liberum sur la liberté des mers. Le reste demeura dans ses papiers et resta inconnu jusqu'à ce que le manuscrit reparût dans une vente en 1864. Cette édition latine est de peu après.
