Contexte et histoire
Écrit vers 180. Le grec original est presque entièrement perdu et l'ouvrage survit surtout dans une ancienne traduction latine. Et voici ce qui le rend irremplaçable : jusqu'en 1945, c'était la source principale de ce qu'on savait du gnosticisme, les textes gnostiques n'ayant pas été conservés. Cette année-là parurent les codex de Nag Hammadi et la comparaison devint possible : Irénée résume assez fidèlement, mais c'est tout de même un adversaire qui parle, et il faut s'en souvenir à chaque page.
