Contexte et histoire
Paru sans nom d'auteur en 1695, et pour cause : la conclusion est que l'essentiel est de croire que Jésus est le Messie et d'amender sa vie, le reste étant surajouté. Cela lui valut aussitôt l'accusation de socinianisme — c'est-à-dire de nier la Trinité — et une polémique de plusieurs années. Locke n'a jamais reconnu ce livre pour sien de son vivant. L'ouvrage relève du débat sur la tolérance autant que de la théologie : si le minimum qu'il faut croire est petit, ce qu'on peut exiger par la loi l'est aussi.
