Contexte et histoire
Ils parurent anonymement en 1689, juste après la Glorieuse Révolution, et furent longtemps lus comme sa justification. Peter Laslett montra en 1960 qu'ils avaient été écrits plus tôt, vers 1679-1683, pendant la crise de l'Exclusion : ils plaidaient pour une révolution à venir, non pour une révolution accomplie. Locke nia toute sa vie en être l'auteur et ne le reconnut que dans son testament.
