Le manuel de gouvernement attribué à Kautilya : administration, finances, droit, agriculture, mines, espionnage, diplomatie et guerre, le tout avec la froideur de qui écrit pour celui qui commande.
Contexte et histoire
Ce texte fut perdu des siècles et connu de nom seulement. En 1905, un pandit remit un manuscrit sur feuilles de palme à la bibliothèque orientale de Mysore, et R. Shamasastry l'identifia et l'édita : jusque-là, personne à l'époque moderne ne l'avait lu. L'attribution à Kautilya, ministre de Chandragupta Maurya, est traditionnelle, mais les spécialistes datent le texte tel qu'il nous est parvenu bien plus tard et le tiennent pour une œuvre accumulée.
