Le premier volume d'une édition victorienne en six tomes des œuvres de Platon, traduite en anglais de façon délibérément littérale.
Contexte et histoire
Il vaut la peine de savoir comment on cite Platon, car aucun de ces volumes n'y sert. La référence universelle est la pagination de Stephanus — le « 327a » au début de la République —, qui vient de l'édition grecque de 1578 et que toute édition sérieuse imprime en marge, dans quelque langue que ce soit. Avec ce numéro, une citation se vérifie en grec, en anglais ou en français ; avec un tome et une page, non. Le découpage en six volumes appartient à l'éditeur du XIXe siècle.
