Contexte et histoire
Le sous-titre est « Philosophie de la misère ». L'argument prend la forme d'une série : la division du travail multiplie la production et du même coup atrophie l'ouvrier ; les machines délivrent de l'effort et du même coup privent d'emploi ; la concurrence fait baisser les prix et du même coup ruine. Proudhon n'en conclut pas qu'il faille abolir cela, mais qu'il faut trouver l'équilibre de chaque couple, et c'est exactement la position que Marx attaqua l'année suivante dans « Misère de la philosophie », en retournant son titre. Il vaut la peine de lire les deux livres à la suite, et tous deux sont au corpus : c'est la première grande discussion interne du socialisme, et l'enjeu — les contradictions se résolvent-elles ou s'équilibrent-elles — se discute encore.
