Contexte et histoire
Paru en 1883. La distinction qui en sort est celle qui a duré : les sciences de la nature expliquent, celles de l'esprit comprennent ; l'une cherche des causes, l'autre du sens, et c'est leur confusion que Dilthey voulait empêcher. Un détail est bon à savoir : ce volume est le premier d'une œuvre qui devait en compter d'autres, et le second n'est jamais venu. Ce qu'on lit est donc une position du problème sans la construction qui devait suivre.
