Le second volume de l'ouvrage où Godwin soutient que le gouvernement n'est un mal nécessaire que tant que dure l'ignorance, et que la contrainte, la propriété et jusqu'à la promesse deviennent superflues à mesure que la raison s'étend.
Contexte et histoire
Paru en 1793, en pleine réaction britannique contre la Révolution française ; on dit que Godwin échappa aux poursuites parce que le livre était trop cher pour atteindre le public qui inquiétait le gouvernement. Un détail d'édition compte : il donna une deuxième édition en 1796 et une troisième en 1798, en les adoucissant. Les positions les plus extrêmes sont dans la première, et qui le cite devrait donc toujours préciser l'édition qu'il lit.
